Choose a realistic finishing route. You can compare every kit below without completing this plan.

Plan before buying: arrange garden soil, an accepting compost system, a separate soil factory or an agreed recipient. Allow room for two bins and their lids/drains, or plan a pause in collecting scraps. Existing suitable bins may mean you only need bran. Use fresh scraps; avoid moldy or rotten food and excess liquid or oil. Fermentation time varies: RHS describes about two weeks after filling; BLH specifies 3–4 weeks. Follow your kit’s instructions. Expect an acidic smell, not a promise of no odors or pests.

Make room for the whole cycle.

Measure the bins and the access they need. Set aside a finishing area, a way to drain liquid and a backup for interruptions. If you have no finishing route yet, arranging one is the next step—not buying a bucket.
